St. Raymond of Penyafort

Born at Penyafort, near Barcelona, about 1175. He was ordained, and became a professor of philosophy and law. He entered the Dominican Order in 1222, shortly after the death of St. Dominic. He became Master General of the Order. He was a master of moral theology and of canon law; at Gregory IX's request, he edited the Book of Decretals. His Summary of Casesgave rules for the administration of the sacrament of penance. He died on 6 January 1275.
